Flat car battery? Find out what needs checking.

A car that struggles to start does not automatically need a new battery. A battery test can help separate a low charge from a battery condition problem.

Notice the symptoms

Slow cranking, a clicking sound, dim lights or electrical equipment behaving unusually can be signs of a low 12V battery. They are clues rather than a diagnosis. Connections, the starting system and other electrical faults can cause similar symptoms.

Tell us whether the problem happened once or keeps returning, how often the vehicle is used and whether it has recently needed charging or a jump-start.

Low charge and poor health are different

A battery can run low after infrequent use, repeated short journeys or something being left switched on. A worn or faulty battery may struggle to hold a useful charge. A vehicle charging fault or an electrical drain can also make a healthy battery go flat.

Our 12V battery health check assesses the battery at the time of the visit and provides a printed result with advice. A low charge can mean charging and retesting is needed. A battery test alone cannot rule out every wiring, charging or drain problem.

If the vehicle will not start

Follow your handbook for the vehicle’s approved procedure. Jump-starting arrangements vary, especially on hybrids and electric vehicles. If you are unsure, arrange assistance from your breakdown provider. Do not attempt to charge or jump-start a visibly damaged or leaking battery.

Licence to Chill’s advertised service is planned mobile battery testing. Battery supply, fitting, coding, recovery and emergency attendance are not included.

Arrange a check before deciding

Send your registration, postcode and the symptoms so we can confirm suitability and a quote. We visit homes and workplaces around Selby and Goole by arrangement.

The check covers the 12V battery, not an electric vehicle’s high-voltage traction battery. You can book it individually or alongside air-con servicing and diagnostics in the £99.99 Chill & Check package.
